The present monograph is the first comprehensive scholarly treatment of the Jangar epic in world scholarship, presenting a systematic comparative typological analysis of all major regional versions of the monument. The Jangar (Dzhangar) is the central monument of Kalmyk (Western Oirat) oral literature, a cycle of heroic songs set in the mythical land of Bumba and transmitted by specialist bards (jangarchis) among the Kalmyks of the lower Volga steppe, the Oirats of Xinjiang, and the Mongols and Buryats. The monograph proceeds through four comparative sections: an analysis of the archaic tuul-uligar genre as the structural source of the Jangar's warrior-courtship plot; Buryat variants and the reactualization of archaic epic patterns; Mongolian versions; Xinjiang-Oirat versions; and a detailed treatment of the Kalmyk versions - their transformation of archaic material, and the artistic structure of the warrior-exploit songs - culminating in a synthesis that situates the Jangar within the broader context of Inner Asian heroic epic traditions. The volume includes a bibliography, appendix, and an English-language summary. Published by the prestigious Vostochnaya Literatura Publishing Firm of Nauka - successor to the Glavnaya Redaktsiya Vostochnoy Literatury (GRWL) and the principal Soviet Oriental studies imprint - with a print run of only 650 copies. With the first English translation of the Jangar published by the University of California Press in 2023, international scholarly interest in this epic has entered a new phase, and Kichikov's comparative study remains the foundational Russian-language reference for any researcher approaching this tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44346822918186,"sku":null,"price":70.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_3568.jpg?v=1778474141","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/kichikov-a-the-heroic-epic-dzhangar-a-comparative-typological-study-of-the-monument-geroicheskii-epos-dzhangar-1992-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
