He is remembered for championing the hypothesis that the Tunguska explosion of 1908 was the crash of an alien craft, and, as a footnote that interests chess collectors, he was also a FIDE International Master of chess composition. The Arctic Bridge is part of his Polar Confrontation cycle. Its engineers and scientists design and build a gigantic bridge of friendship across the Arctic seas, an engineering dream meant to link the continents. The novel was first printed in the magazine Vokrug sveta in 1941 and appeared in book form from 1946 according to the standard bibliography, so this is a later printing and not a first edition. The author's own foreword, printed before the prologue, speaks of the project as a real engineering idea and of the hope that mutual attraction between peoples will one day sweep away the so-called steel curtain, which places the book firmly in the Cold War thaw of 1959. It belongs to the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF), the Detgiz series known to collectors as the frame series, where the series bibliography records it as number 49. Illustrations are by G. Makarov, who also drew the cover vignette of skyscrapers joined by the great tube, and the volume has pictorial endpapers showing the bridge and a submarine. With a Detgiz print run of 90,000 copies it is not scarce, but the weighty 534-page format, the optimistic technocratic fantasy and the series binding keep it popular with collectors of Soviet science fiction, frame series completists and readers interested in Cold War utopias.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71695796437245,"sku":null,"price":45.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_6737_ac34b120-37eb-44a9-aa03-734aa3f02069.jpg?v=1792925385","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/kazantsev-a-the-arctic-bridge-arkticheskiy-most-illustrated-by-g-makarov-library-of-adventure-and-science-fiction-1959-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
