E. Zhukovsky (Военно-воздушная инженерная академия имени Н. Е. Жуковского) — the principal higher-education and research institution of Soviet military aviation engineering, founded in Moscow in 1920 on the initiative of Nikolai Yegorovich Zhukovsky, the «father of Russian aviation». The album served as the visual companion to the academy's foundational lecture course on the technology of aviation materials, covering the metallurgical, polymer, and composite materials used in airframe and engine construction: aluminum and magnesium alloys, titanium, heat-resistant steels and superalloys, aviation rubbers and plastics, lubricants, fuels, and the technological processes of casting, forging, rolling, heat treatment, welding, and surface protection. The 247 plates are arranged sequentially to follow the course syllabus and were intended to spare cadets the time required to copy complex technical drawings, phase diagrams, microstructural images, and apparatus schematics during lectures. The sixth edition reflects the post-Sputnik state of Soviet aerospace materials, including advances in titanium technology and high-temperature alloys developed for jet and rocket engines.
