Dandamaev, himself a major Soviet Assyriologist and historian of Achaemenid Iran. Grantovsky's study undertakes a systematic philological and historical analysis of the earliest evidence for Iranian-speaking tribes in Western Asia, drawing on Assyrian and Urartian cuneiform inscriptions, Old Iranian texts, the accounts of classical authors, and archaeological material, to reconstruct the appearance and spread of these populations in the ninth and eighth centuries BCE, in the two centuries preceding the formation of the Median kingdom and the Achaemenid empire. At the core of the work is a detailed onomastic analysis reconstructing Iranian personal and tribal names as transmitted through Akkadian cuneiform orthography, from which Grantovsky establishes chronological and geographic patterns for the ninth-century and later eighth-century material and argues for the migration of these tribes into the ancient Near East from the Eurasian steppe by way of the Caucasus. The book engages directly with the long-disputed \"Aryan problem\" in the ethnogenesis of the Persians, Kurds, and other West Iranian-speaking peoples, and remains, more than five decades after its appearance, a standard reference on the early history of the Medes and related tribes - sufficiently so that a revised and expanded second edition was issued in 2007.
