Born in Kutaisi to a Scottish father and a Georgian mother, Marr rose to become professor at St. Petersburg University (1902), director of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture, vice-president of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the most institutionally powerful linguist in the Soviet system. His Japhetic theory - the hypothesis that the Caucasian languages formed a Japhetic proto-stratum underlying all world languages and related to the Semitic group - was elevated into a form of Soviet Marxist orthodoxy from the late 1920s onward; Marrism dominated Soviet linguistics, ethnology, and related disciplines until Stalin publicly condemned it as anti-Marxist in the Pravda debate of 1950. The present volume is a trilingual Georgian-Russian-French jubilee Festschrift, compiled and published in 1934 by the Japhetidological Circle named after Marr at Tbilisi State University - the primary Georgian institutional vehicle of Marrist linguistics. The volume is dedicated to the 45th anniversary of Marr's scholarly activity and was published in the final year of his life: Marr died on 20 December 1934, weeks or months after this volume appeared. The editorial board brings together the leading Georgian linguists and philologists active in the Marrist orbit at TGU in 1934, including Alexander Glonti (Georgian lexicographer), Levan Melikset-Beg (Georgian orientalist and ethnographer), and Mikheil Chikovani.
