Martin Henry Fischer (1879–1962), professor of physiology at the University of Cincinnati and a leading American disciple of Wolfgang Ostwald, treated nephritis not as a primarily inflammatory or infectious process but as a disturbance of the colloidal water-binding capacity of the renal tissues — a radical reconception that placed kidney disease within the broader framework of the «colloidal physiology» he was then promoting against the dominant classical-pathological orthodoxy. The Russian edition is of unusual interest for the calibre of its editorial team: the translation appears under the supervision of Nikolai Konstantinovich Koltsov (1872–1940), founder of the Russian school of experimental biology and later author of the prescient hypothesis of hereditary «giant molecules» that anticipated the structure of DNA, who supplied his own additions; the volume is prefaced by Lev Aleksandrovich Tarasevich (1868–1927), the eminent microbiologist and immunologist whose name is still borne by Russia's principal institute for the standardisation of sera and vaccines. Issued by the progressive Moscow «Nauka» book-publishers on the eve of the First World War, the book stands as a document both of pre-revolutionary Russia's close engagement with frontier American biomedical thought and of the colloidal-physiological moment that briefly promised to recast the whole of pathology.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44288956596266,"sku":null,"price":140.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_1470.jpg?v=1777216423","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/fischer-m-nephritis-an-experimental-and-critical-investigation-of-its-nature-its-causes-and-the-foundations-of-its-treatment-nefrit-eksperimentalnoe-i-kriticheskoe-issledovanie-ego-sushchnosti-ego-prichin-i-osnov-ego-lecheniya-1914-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
