The first series had appeared under ONTI from 1934 to 1938 and was terminated during the political campaigns of the late 1930s; the revival of 1957 under Yakov Dubnov, Aleksei Lyapunov and Aleksei Markushevich, with editorial participation from Ilya Bronshtein, Abram Lopshits and Isaak Yaglom, gathered the Moscow mathematical elite around the problems of school and university teaching, and only six issues appeared before the series again ceased in 1961. The contents are extraordinary for a publication nominally addressed to teachers. Issue 3 carries V. I. Arnold's early paper on the representation of functions of several variables as superpositions of functions of fewer variables, his exposition of the result that resolved Hilbert's thirteenth problem, written while he was still Kolmogorov's student. Issue 5 contains the Russian translation of Bourbaki's \"The Architecture of Mathematics\" together with Lyapunov on the foundations and style of modern mathematics and Rashevsky on geometry and its axiomatics. Issue 6, published in memory of Aleksandr Khinchin, includes Dobrushin on mathematical methods in linguistics, Yaglom on complex numbers in geometry, and Bezborodov and Orlov on machine chess. Running across issues 2, 3, 4 and 6 is Boltyansky and Efremovich's celebrated serialised essay on the basic ideas of topology, alongside contributions by Gelfand's circle, Kolmogorov, Gelfond, Lyusternik, Fikhtengolts and translations of Borel, Sierpinski, Blaschke and Marshall Stone.
