G. B. Fedorov, who writes of the work of \"our expedition\" at sites such as Lukashevka II, excavated from 1953 and again in 1957-1959, builds the study on three successive cultures: the Getic culture of the second century BC to the second century AD, with its Lukashevka and Lipitsa groups; the Chernyakhov culture of the second to fourth centuries; and the Slavic culture of the sixth to ninth centuries. Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Moldavian written sources are set beside archaeological, ethnographic, anthropological and toponymic evidence and the results of research in neighbouring Romania, with comparisons running from the Dacian fortresses to the cemeteries of Sarata Monteoru in Romania and Balta Verde on the Danube. The argument, characteristic of its date, traces the formation of the East Slavic population of the Dniester region within the Old Russian state, and later anthropological work on the medieval Slavs of the region cited Fedorov's data on the fall in settlement numbers after the Chernyakhov period. The volume is documented with line drawings of pottery, photographic plates and distribution maps of the sites of the second to fourth centuries, arranged in 71 tables. A printed list of corrections is laid in. The colophon records an edition of 1,500 copies, small for a major academy monograph.
