Weinstein, signed to press on 26 September 1937, when Euwe held the world championship title he had won from Alekhine in December 1935 and was to lose in the return match less than three months later. In his preface, dated Amsterdam, November 1935, Euwe explains that the book grew out of lectures given that year at the People's University in Amsterdam and continues his Fundamentals of Chess of 1931. Although it gives strategy considerable space, it is mostly devoted to tactics, that is, to the combinational part of the game, a subject that in his view had received little attention in print; he sets out to break the commonest combinations into their component elements and to classify combinational play on that basis. Eight chapters lead from general principles of strategy, including activity of the pieces, the centre and strong squares, through attacks on immobile pawns, to combinations against the king and against other objects, complex combinations and endgame combinations, and the volume closes with an index of games and endings. The illustrative games range from Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker and Rotlewi to the Moscow tournament of 1935, with Goglidze, Flohr, Spielmann and Pirc, and Euwe's own games from Zurich 1934. The cover is by Yu. D. Skaldin, and the book was issued by OGIZ under its Fizkultura i turizm imprint in 20,000 copies, printed at the Leningradskaya Pravda printing house. It will interest collectors of Soviet chess literature, of Euwe and of the world championship period of 1935 to 1937, and students of Georgian chess for the Goglidze game.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71607123050749,"sku":null,"price":80.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_6319_45f05da3-b1e2-4be5-ae0b-fdbfe4864311.jpg?v=1792358488","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/euwe-max-strategy-and-tactics-strategiya-i-taktika-authorised-translation-from-the-dutch-by-s-weinstein-edited-by-d-m-gorfinkel-1937-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
