The articles were first printed in the press, chiefly Krasnaya Zvezda, and this volume brings together 101 pieces written between April 1942 and March 1943, the months of the German summer offensive, Stalingrad and the turn of the war. It is arranged in eight sections: \"The German\", \"The Fate of the Jackals\", \"The Price of Treason\", \"Glow\", \"On Our Land\", \"Russia\", \"The Hard Road\" and \"Light in the Dugout\". It includes the best-known and most controversial piece, \"Kill!\" (Krasnaya Zvezda, 24 July 1942), as well as portraits of the peoples of the USSR, an essay on Hemingway and reports from Sevastopol, Stalingrad and Kharkov. Ehrenburg's insistent use of the word \"German\" rather than \"fascist\" in these texts is the feature most often discussed, and it made him a prominent target of German propaganda; in April 1945 Pravda published an official rebuke of his line. The volume is a primary document of the Soviet propaganda war, printed in 25,000 copies on the poor paper typical of 1943. It is of interest to collectors of Great Patriotic War imprints, historians of propaganda and journalism, and collectors of Ehrenburg. \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71510646128893,"sku":null,"price":80.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_5304_08a34019-b646-4a2a-b232-fcb92bcabf1c.jpg?v=1791491813","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/ehrenburg-ilya-war-april-1942-march-1943-voina-aprel-1942-mart-1943-first-edition-1943-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
