Compiled at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory in the Georgian SSR — the leading Soviet centre for stellar and lunar polarimetry under the directorship of Evgeniy Kharadze — the atlas presents 21 large color charts of the visible lunar disk, each representing the degree of polarization of light reflected from the Moon's surface, plotted at scale 1:15,000,000 in orthographic projection on a five-step color scale (0–1, 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, 4–5 percent). The maps are accompanied by a 23-page introductory text giving the observational programme carried out at Abastumani between 1956 and 1971, the photopolarimetric instrumentation, the reduction techniques, and the selenographic coordinates of each frame. The work belongs to the tradition of Soviet polarimetric selenography founded by N. N. Sytinskaya and inherited by V. P. Dzhapiashvili, who showed that the polarization of moonlight depends sensitively on the microstructure and albedo of the regolith — an approach that complemented the lunar samples returned by Apollo and Luna and provided a powerful tool for remote-sensing studies of airless bodies. With a print run of only 1,100 copies and almost no foreign distribution outside specialist astronomical libraries, the atlas is now scarce, particularly in the West, and remains the standard reference for ground-based lunar polarimetry of the Soviet era.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44292458315818,"sku":null,"price":200.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_1746.jpg?v=1777305440","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/dzhapiashvili-v-p-korol-a-n-polarimetric-atlas-of-the-moon-polyarimetricheskiy-atlas-luny-1982-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
