Born into an aristocratic Ottoman family that lost its standing with the empire's collapse, Derviş became one of Turkey's pioneering female journalists, writing for Cumhuriyet and Tan, and was among the founders of the Socialist Women's Association in 1970; she spent 1953-1963 in political exile in France. Fosforlu Cevriye traces the life of an illiterate Istanbul street prostitute rescued from her circumstances by a communist man who falls in love with her, a narrative scholars have read as a feminist reworking of the socialist-realist \"positive hero\" plot exemplified by Gorky's Mother, substituting a subaltern sex worker for Gorky's revolutionary mother figure. The novel first appeared in book form not in Turkish but in Russian translation in 1957, and reached Georgian readers a decade later in this 1967 edition, translated by Nodar Janashia, with a large print run of 40,000 copies reflecting Soviet publishing interest in socially engaged Turkish left-wing literature.
