Woven around the folk legend of a mother's only son immured alive within the walls of the fortress at Surami to secure its foundations, the novella fuses folkloric legend with the narrative frame device familiar from the Decameron and the Thousand and One Nights, and stands as one of the foundational texts of Georgian critical realism; it was twice adapted for the screen, notably by Sergei Parajanov and Dodo Abashidze in 1985. The present 1932 edition, prepared with a scholarly foreword and textual editing by the philologist Mikheil Zandukeli and supplemented by a substantial biographical-critical essay by the Old Bolshevik and literary historian Pilipe Makharadze, gathers editorial notes, biographical documentation (including material on Chonkadze's studies and teaching career at the Kavkasioni and Tbilisi theological seminaries), a bibliography, and a corrections list, making it a significant scholarly apparatus edition rather than a mere reprint of the text.
