Manfred, a metaphysical drama of a sorcerer-hero tormented by guilt and striving for transcendence, drew on Goethe's Faust and on Byron's own personal experience of guilt and exile; Cain, a \"mystery\" dramatizing the biblical fratricide as a metaphysical rebellion against divine authority, provoked immediate controversy across Europe for its heterodoxy and has been ranked among the finest dramatic poems in English. Both works achieved wide European resonance and were particularly important for Georgian Romanticism: Nikoloz Baratashvili, the foundational figure of Georgian Romantic poetry, was deeply influenced by Byron and the Byronic hero, and his poem Bedi Kartlisa (The Fate of Kartli, 1839) is acknowledged to show direct Byronic influence. The present translation by Konstantine Chichinaze was issued by Federatsia - the Georgian literary publishing house responsible in the same period for the celebrated 1938 Baratashvili edition with illustrations by Lado Gudiashvili, a publishing program that represents the peak of Soviet Georgian literary book production in the 1930s. \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44318065328170,"sku":null,"price":60.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_2732.jpg?v=1778006166","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/byron-manfred-cain-manfredi-kaeni-translated-by-k-chichinaze-illustrated-by-l-zaalishvili-1936-in-georgian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
