Conceived as a comprehensive survey of world architecture in three volumes, only the first two ever appeared; the third, which would have carried the study forward, was never issued, leaving the project incomplete as originally planned. Volume One traces architectural development from pre-class society through the oriental despotisms of the ancient Near East, extending as far as the fifth century CE and including an extensive treatment of early Islamic architecture. Volume Two examines the architecture of Greece, Rome, and Byzantium, together with the medieval architecture of Kievan Rus, Georgia, Armenia, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Both volumes are richly illustrated with photographs, plans, and reconstructions of major monuments, several reproduced from rare or otherwise inaccessible sources, and remain valued for their scope and detail even after Brunov's later, revised treatments of some of the same material. The set was issued by Academia, the celebrated Soviet publishing house renowned for the exceptional quality of its scholarly and literary editions; Volume One, dated 1937, appeared in the very year Academia's independent existence came to an end amid the Great Purge, when much of its editorial staff was arrested and the press was absorbed into Goslitizdat - lending this set particular interest as one of the imprint's final major scholarly productions. A cornerstone reference for historians of architecture, Byzantine studies, and the history of Soviet academic publishing.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44645758599210,"sku":null,"price":250.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_0706_f7903d15-56f0-4779-bd69-c1e8eb76ac7d.jpg?v=1785602687","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/brunov-n-essays-on-the-history-of-architecture-ocherki-po-istorii-arkhitektury-in-three-volumes-vols-1-2-published-vol-3-never-issued-binding-design-by-i-f-rerberg-academia-1935-1937-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
