Translated from the English-language original published by the Polish Academy of Sciences as volume 44 of its \"Monografie Matematyczne\" series (PWN, Warsaw, 1967), the Russian edition was edited by Yuri Mikhailovich Smirnov, a leading Soviet authority on dimension theory and general topology at Moscow State University. Smirnov's translator's preface frames the book as a further major contribution from the Polish school of topology, comparable in stature to the Gurevich-Wallman \"Dimension Theory\" (1948) and Kuratowski's \"Topology,\" and praises Borsuk's characteristically compact, lucid exposition of a field straddling general and algebraic topology, rich with more than fifty carefully posed open problems, the last chapter being devoted entirely to directions for further research. Smirnov notes the existence of an American monograph of the same title by Sze-Tsen Hu (Theory of Retracts, Detroit, 1965), quoting Hu's own review to the effect that the two books complement rather than duplicate one another, Borsuk favoring the geometric side of the theory while Hu pursues the closely related extension problem for continuous mappings.
