Kornely Borozdin (1828-1896) was a Russian writer, lawyer, and state official who served closely with the ruling Dadiani family of the Principality of Mingrelia (Samegrelo). During the crucial years of 1854-1861, Borozdin resided in Zugdidi as a tutor and advisor to the young Prince Niko Dadiani and his regent mother, Princess Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani. His memoirs provide an unparalleled, intimate eyewitness account of the twilight of the Mingrelian Principality, its complex political maneuverings with the Russian Empire, the devastating impact of the Crimean War (specifically the invasion of Omar Pasha), and the broader socio-cultural life of Samegrelo and neighboring Svaneti. This 1934 publication represents the first Georgian edition of Borozdin's memoirs, made uniquely significant by its translator: Tedo Sakhokia (1868-1956), a revered Georgian ethnographer, lexicographer, and writer.
