First published in 1928 as No. 29 in the numbered series of the Leningrad Oriental Institute - successor to the pre-revolutionary Institute of Living Oriental Languages - this \"Essay on the History of Persian Literature\" was one of Bertels's earliest full monographs and among the first Soviet attempts at a synthetic Russian-language survey of the field, tracing Persian literature from its pre-Islamic origins through the classical poets, the Sufi tradition, the prose and poetry of the Safavid and Qajar periods, the emergence of the modern Persian novel, and the literature of the constitutional era, closing with a bibliography and index. Bertels notes in his preface that even E.G. Browne's celebrated four-volume English history left room for a compact Russian introduction to the field, which this book was written to fill; it was reviewed within the small Soviet Iranological community soon after publication. The institute that issued it was itself a casualty of the era it belonged to: named in 1927 for the prominent Bolshevik official Avel Enukidze, secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR and a close associate of Stalin, the institute carried his name until his fall from grace in the 1935 \"Kremlin Affair\" and his subsequent execution in 1937; the institute itself was liquidated in June 1938 after mass arrests of its faculty and students.
