Drawing on multilingual sources — Georgian, Greek, Byzantine, Genoese, Ottoman, and Russian — the book is organized into eleven chapters covering the geography of the Georgian coast, the periodization of Georgian Black Sea trade, maritime relations from the sixth through the eighteenth centuries, the role of the Georgian littoral in international transit trade, the organization of medieval maritime commerce, ancient Georgian nautical terminology, and river navigation within Georgia.
