S. Pushkin's birth (1799–1899) — the great national jubilee that produced an avalanche of commemorative publications across the entire Russian Empire and was particularly enthusiastically marked in the Caucasus, where Pushkin's brief but seminal sojourns in 1820 and 1829 had made him one of the founding figures of the so-called \"Caucasian text\" of Russian literature. The forty-page brochure compiled and published by K. N. Begichev gathers in popular form the biographical and literary materials connected with Pushkin's travels through the Northern Caucasus, the mineral waters at Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk with the Raevsky family, and his journey to Arzrum during the Russo-Turkish war — the experiences that fed directly into \"The Prisoner of the Caucasus,\" \"The Fountain of Bakhchisarai,\" \"Tazit,\" and the prose \"Journey to Arzrum.\" The book belongs to the substantial corpus of Tiflis-printed jubilee literature of 1899; Tiflis at the turn of the century was a vigorous imperial publishing center, and K. P. Kozlovsky's printing house on the central Golovinsky Avenue was one of its principal Russian-language presses. Modest Caucasian Pushkiniana of this kind — small popular brochures in fragile illustrated paper wrappers, sold at 25 kopecks — were ephemeral by their nature and survive in very small numbers; copies are rare on WorldCat and almost never appear on the international antiquarian market. The present copy, despite obvious damp damage to the wrappers, preserves the entire text block and both pictorial wrappers (portrait of Pushkin and signed Caucasian landscape), making it a complete survivor of an uncommon piece of Pushkin centenary ephemera.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44287521161258,"sku":null,"price":120.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_1250.jpg?v=1777145779","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/begichev-k-n-pushkin-in-the-caucasus-pushkin-na-kavkaze-1899-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
