Stefan Banach (1892-1945) created modern functional analysis largely single-handedly, giving his name to the Banach space, the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, and the Banach-Tarski paradox, and led the celebrated Lwów School of Mathematics, whose members famously conducted much of their research at the Scottish Café, recording problems in the Scottish Book. Unlike his research monographs, this textbook was conceived as an accessible first introduction to differential and integral calculus, written with Banach's characteristic willingness to sacrifice full rigor for clarity where a beginner's understanding was better served by intuition, while still covering the essential theorems of the subject in a compact volume. Banach survived the German occupation of Lwów by working as a lice-feeder in a typhus research institute, one of the few forms of employment that spared academics from deportation; he died in 1945, shortly after the city's return to Soviet control, before he could take up the chair that had been arranged for him in Kraków. This 1958 Russian translation, prepared and edited by S. I.
