Composed in the years following Aragon's definitive turn from prose fiction back to poetry in the 1940s, the poem ranges formally across free verse, counted lines of eighteen to twenty syllables, octosyllables and alexandrines, prose passages, and passages of dialogue and self-directed irony, closing with an address to the poets and writers of the future. The work sits within Aragon's mature poetic corpus alongside \"Les Yeux d'Elsa\" and \"Le Roman inacheve,\" continuing his lifelong dialogue in verse with his wife and muse Elsa Triolet, who appears directly in the poem's final movement, \"Elsa entre dans le poeme.\" Aragon (1897-1982), a founding figure of French Surrealism turned committed Communist poet and novelist, remains one of the most significant French poets of the twentieth century, and first editions of his major postwar collections are staples of French Surrealist and twentieth-century poetry collecting.
