His mineralogical treatise systematically describes minerals, gemstones, metals, and alloys, their properties, specific gravities, places of origin, working and trade, interweaving precise scientific observation with citations from earlier Greek, Persian, and Arabic authorities. For centuries known chiefly through a single defective manuscript, the work was only properly reconstructed after additional manuscripts surfaced in Kayseri and the Topkapi Saray library in Istanbul in the 1920s, enabling Fritz Krenkow's critical Arabic edition (Hyderabad, 1936-1937), the basis of the present Russian translation by A. M. Belenitsky with mineralogical commentary by G. G. Lemmlein.
