Acharyan Institute of Language of the Armenian Academy of Sciences — the central institution for the academic study of the Armenian language, named after Hrachia Acharyan (1876–1953), the foundational philologist and Armenologist whose six-volume Etymological Dictionary of Armenian Roots remains a permanent reference. The volume presents a comprehensive instrumental study of the consonant system of modern literary (Eastern) Armenian, structured around the celebrated three-way phonological opposition (voiced \/ voiceless aspirated \/ voiceless ejective) that has long made Armenian a touchstone for general phonetic theory and a central case in debates over the typology of stop systems and the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European. The introductory chapter sets out the experimental methodology — palatography, X-ray cineradiography (kinorentgenografiya) and acoustic spectrography, conducted on the speech of native speakers recruited from students, postgraduates and faculty of Yerevan higher education institutions, as well as Yerevan radio announcers — followed by systematic chapters on each consonant class. Amaliya Arutyunovna Khachatryan and Vladimir Nikitovich Ayrapetyan were both research staff of the Acharyan Institute laboratory, and the volume represents the most comprehensive Soviet-era instrumental study of Armenian consonants, supplementing — and in numerous places correcting — the classical descriptions of A. Meillet, A. Ghapantsyan and G. Jahukyan.
